One More Child Goes To School
Launched
in June of 2005, this challenging project provides scholarships to Sri
Lankan school students aged 5-18 years to allow them to continue beyond
primary and to undertake higher education. To date, 80 students are
benefiting from this program. The financial assistance is provided by
donors in Greece. This assistance is in the form of six euros per month
deposited into each student's bank account and then an additional three
euros per month to purchase school materials required to continue their
studies. The Athens Network of Collaborating Experts (ANCE) in Greece
provides the support for 65 students and the International Youth
Exchange Organisation of Japan is a growing partner in initiative by
providing support for 15 students.
A key
aspect of this activity is the ability for many people to participate.
The co-ordinators of the project have been delighted by the support
shown from around the world. Special mention must be made of the
simple, but very useful donation of a fax machine, with phone, printer
and scanner included. This was co-ordinated by Mr.Nooh Al-hammadi with
support from the SWYAA-UAE for use in the administration of this
project. From Japan, Ms Tamae Saito (IYEO) co-ordinated the donations
of stationary from four junior high school students to be sent to
recipients of the scholarship. In response, the students wrote thank
you cards which were sent back to Japan.
This project makes a long-term commitment to each student it supports.
The successful launch and rewarding first year of this project is a
wonderful example of how a valuable community project can be
co-ordinated by SWY alumni, involve external partnerships and stimulate
support from SWY alumni members around the world.
Email, telephone or write to the project co-ordinators if you would
like to contribute your time, expertise, provide corporate support in
the form of goods, or simply provide finances to allow more students to
experience greater educational opportunities.
